Yep, that's right. Recently, I came to the stark realization that there are certain things that I think shouldn't be too thin or skinny. By stuff, I mean skinny scarves, skinny Christmas trees, people with the nickname "skinny" cause you know they up to no good. I don't even like skinny babies. See, I'm Southern so a skinny baby just ain't right. Babies are supposed to be fluffy with fat cheeks and butter ball legs. Speaking of skinny scarves, I widened my Vintage Velvet by 16 stitches. It didn't look right at 34 stitches...even on US10.
Most of all, I realized that I would never ever be skinny. Looking around at the other women in my extended family during Thanksgiving preparations, I realized that like the other women there, I'm a real woman. I realized that it's normal to have a pudge here and a bulge there, especially since I'm Black and Chickasaw. Ain't nothing anorexic in my heritage! Nope, I'm breed for strength, endurance and to survive and that means being fluffy. I'm so sick of seeing these idealized (airbrushed and whittled down) women on the TV starving themselves to death so that we can see their ribs and boney arms. Hell with that! I don't know how those Hollywood heifas do it? I guess that's why a lof of them are so damn evil. I know I'd be a mean one if all I could eat was celery and bottled water. Gimme some meat, dammit...and while you at it pass me some macaroni and cheese, some rolls, some pie, a glass of Coke Zero (I LOVE ME SOME COKE ZERO!) some gravy, some...well, you get the picture. LOL!
Look as long as you maintain and you're healthy, stop lashing yourself and enjoy your life.
Soon, I'll be pushing geriatric and I, for one, don't want to sit around regretting and thinking of all the shouldawouldacouldas of my life. I'll go to the gym and workout so that I can prolong my health and be able to function on my own that much longer, but I'm done scrimping and scrounging for calories. I'll just eat what I want when I want, but maintain my proportions.
Down with the skinny b*tches...cause I'm fluffy and fierce, baby! Yeah...
One caveat though, I do, however, like my men on the skinny side. LOL! ...just works out better that way. *ehem*

Tiara Girls: April The Conceited
So, Gwen and I were knitting and watching TV after she came over to help me put up my Christmas Tree since she's all about the holiday spirit and we're sitting there and Tiara Girls comes on MTV. This episode features April, a young Black woman from Kansas City competing in the Tri-County pagent. I'm like, "YEAH! A Home Girl". WHY! WHY! Did she have to be a raging self absorbed b*otch! *hangs head in shame*
Since April couldn't afford to compete on her own, she went around to local Kansas City small businesses and asked for SPONSORSHIPS. When I hear the word "sponsorship", I think of a nascar driver and his car? Where would a beauty pagent contestant show homage to her sponsors? on her sash? *pfft* She did have a "Thank You" party for her sponsors for which she was an hour late and during which she failed to individually acknowledge her sponsors or even display their banners. *deep sigh* Her honored guests were relegated to just sit there at the banquet hall waiting for April to arrive. No hors d'oeuvres, no drinks, no entertainment, no nothing. Soon after she arrived, Lorenzo (pagent coach) ended up opening the buffet since apparently no one else thought to remove the lids from the meat trays or prepare anything else.
In my opinion, she should have used the word, DONATION not SPONSORSHIP. *eyeroll* It's not like these businesses can even write off the money they gave her, can they? She told them that she needed the money to go to college. So, they gave her money and got absolutely nothing in return because she didn't win the pagent and didn't even go to college. It's people that like her that make it hard on others who are really determined and need assistance to help them truly achieve their goals.

I'm so so disappointed in her behavior and how she represented herself. She was admonished several times by several of her vendors that she should be on time for her appointments. She was even late for a pagent interview! Nothing like wasting an hour or two of your pagent coach's time or standing up your seamstress for a fitting. You see, she hired TWO (2) very knowledgeable Black pagent coaches Devon and Lorenzo and fired both of them thinking that she knew better. Nevermind that they gave her honest feedback and only sought to help her. THEN! She had the audacity to blame her loss on the fact that she is a dark skinned Black woman! WHATEVA! TRICK! YOU LOST BECAUSE YOU SUCK! *guh*

Rob & Big Episode 4: Commitment to Fitness
OK! It's official. I love me some Christopher "Big Black" Boykins. He is HILARIOUS!
If you haven't seen this show already...because they replay it every 15 minutes on MTV...you might want to check it out just to see my hommie Big Black the Bodyguard.
In this week's episode, under pressure from Rob to become a lean, mean fighting machine, Big Black agrees to a "Commitment to Fitness". I have to give it to Big Black I can definately relate to a brotha's struggle to lose some weight.
First, poor Big was reduced to visiting the Burbank Recycling Center's scale to see how much he weighs after maxing out the scale at the local Curves franchise. Big Black is 6'6" 416 of solid Black beautiful love. :) Then, off to the hypnotist to kick start his commitment and let his subconscious know he's ready to kick ass.
Then, to the lovely "Erin Naimi, RD" the best damn nutritionist EVER! I love this woman.
YES! She understands the mind of the food addict. She knows that starvation and repression doesn't work for us. She's all about portion control and learning to stop eating when your stomach is full. Favoring the pre-portioning approach. She only asks Big Black to workout 2 times a week to start. I love how she put Rob in check for trying to tell her how to do her job when he objects to her plan for Big Black. Rob prefers a more stark, boot camp starvation approach. After the nutritionist, they are off to the local bike shop to find Big Black a bike fit for a man of this stature.
After 3 weeks of hardwork, Rob and Black return to the recycling center only to find that Black hasn't lost a single pound. Determined, Black returns to his nutritionist for inspiration. He's convinced she holds the key to his success.
Upon arrival at Ms. Naimi's office, Erin asks where Rob was and Black replies "Yeah, I had to leave him behind you can't bring skinny people when you go see a nutritionist." Erin encourages Black and reassures him that he is doing a great job and tells him he can even have a burger to celebrate his dedication over the past 3 weeks.
After his session with Erin, Black goes to get his favorite burger. Arriving at home, Rob inquires about his session with Erin. Black says, "She told me no more scales. Don't get on another scale again....Yes, I love that woman! I knew there was something I loved about her. That woman is down with the big people. She knows how struggle it is to get a burger in your systems. It's tough and that's why I love her so much."

Search for the Great Male Knitter
Lately, I've become very interested in seeking out male knitters on the net.
It's kinda like mining for diamonds because they are very very rare to find online, you see.
In particular, I'd like to find straight male knitters. This morning it occurred to me that I have NEVER EVER seen a Black male knitter as yet. That would be the find of all finds....like finding a 40 carat diamond in the rough. Obviously, a Black male would probably see knitting as too feminine and hence be on the down low (dl) about his fiberly passion. Last night, I was watching VH1's Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and one of the men interviewed was commenting about Glam Rock stating that the ultimate expression of male security is to be ultra feminine. Basically, saying that heterosexual men that are confident and secure have no problem being perceived as feminine and might seek to be ultra feminine to express their strong masculinity. I've come across a few male knitter blog links here and there and continue to suss them out.
I'm already a member of Men Who Knit. I'm not sure about being a member of that site, though. I feel a little like an interloper. I don't visit or post there much at all anymore. I get the distinct impression that they aren't really keen on female knitters. Just a feeling I got from reading some of the rather cranky posts by some of the male knitters. I can understand why they would guard their cyber haven from female knitters since we dominate the entire industry. At least that's my perception. Has anyone else picked up on that feeling or am I just being overly sensitive?

Let There Be Start-itis!
Nowhere else in my life am I capable of just focusing on one thing at a time. I like to have several things going at once that I go back to frequently. I get bored easily so it's only natural for me to sift through multiple projects at once. Currently, I'm obsessed with finishing my Sensational Knitted Socks Waffle Rib socks, my Scarf Style Vintage Velvet scarf and a couple sewing projects, so I've set my other knitting projects off to the side for a while.

The Sundance East Channel
Anybody ever watch this channel on cable. It's spectacular! It's so witty and charming.
Watching "Iconoclasts" with Isabella Rossellini and Dean Kamen. I learned of the world's need for such basic needs as clean water and electricity. Dean's company DEKA has created beautifully rugged efficient machines that solve some of life's most basic needs. It restored my faith in humanity to see that such a person exists with the vision, ingenuity and wherewithall to accomplish such lofty goals.

I HIGHLY recommend Queen Kahuna's Crazy Toes & Heels Sock Book by MaryAnn Beattie . She prints and sells the book herself, so you can only order it from her, but it's so worth it. This book demystifies the process of making 2 socks at once. You learn to make them toe up or cuff down with lovely short row or slipstitch heels. Personally, I don't know why everyone doesn't make 2 socks at once, but Gwen says that she prefers the process of knitting socks on DPNs, so there are those who don't mind making one sock at at time because they just enjoy knitting them. Me? I gotta have 'em both ready to go when I'm done.

For Those Overseas...
I'm happy to report that I have FINALLY mailed off 4 boxes to Iraq/Afghanistan.
I found a couple of soldiers on the Any Soldier website and sent them some items to make their lives just a little easier, especially since Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching and many of them will not receive any cards or presents from home. *sigh* Isn't that sad!
No matter what we may feel about the wars in the Middle East, let us not forget those serving for us. Many of whom come back to these shores in body bags or missing limbs. So, as we shop for our loved ones, let us also remember our soldiers and put an extra item or two in our basket. Let's look in our cupboards and cabinets for extra unused items that you can send. Magazines, books and games are also much appreciated. If you have any hand knit items to send, I'm sure they would worship the ground you walk on. Can you imagine being over there and receiving a hand knit cap, gloves, scarf, blankets, socks? Those items are worth more than gold to the soldiers.
I've adopted a Black female soldier named LaShawn and a local Kansas soldier named Logan. I know that LaShawn probably needs a lot of Black hair and skin care items, plus frilly girl stuff and I sent Logan all kinds of snacks and highly sought after personal hygiene items. You see it's not like they can walk across the way to the local PX to stock up on things. Personally, I love going to Dollar General and Big Lots and stocking up on staple items to send. I, also, sent Holiday cards, blank note cards and stamps, so that they can write me or anyone they choose.
Should you decide to particpate, here's some helpful hints.

- Use the USPS Flat Rate boxes and stuff them full. It only costs $8.10
- Don't send really big boxes, they are more susceptible to being lost or damaged.
- Do not mix food and hygiene items. The fragrances from personal hygiene
items contaminate the food. - Don't forget to fill out USPS Customs forms.
Place liquid items inside a zippered baggie. - Don't stress out, just put some stuff in a box and send it. They appreciate basic consumables.
- Don't send anything bulky that they can't put in a ruck sack. Stick to consumables
they don't have to worry about shipping back home when they get to come back
home.

Rob & Big: My New Reality Obsession
Intoducing my new reality TV show obsession!
I was scrolling through the cable guide list Saturday when I ran across the title "Rob & Big", so I decided to watch it. It was the premiere episode "Rob and Big: Moving In" and I, literally, howled so much that I scared the cat.
These two guys are hilarious, especially Big the Bodyguard.
Gwen, YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS SHOW! Big is like a big cuddly teddy bear and Rob is so witty and impish.

The Studio Knitting Retreat - January 26-28
Announcing The Studio Winter Knitting Retreat to be held at
The Elms Resort Spa and Conference Center of Excelsior Springs, MO.
So, who wants to go?If my knitter homies want to go maybe we can a bunch of us can bunk in the same room and it can be like a big ole sleep over? HUH! HUH! What do y'all think? That way we save on hotel expenses and we have more money to spend at the Day Spa and yarn. YES! It's ok if you snore, I have ear plugs. :)
A suite for 2 nights at $92.00 = $184 + room taxes + room fees + $148 registration fee = roughly $400 for the weekend for one person. A nice suite at the Elms, typically, goes for about $400 a night.
However, let's say you split the room 4 ways then you're looking at approximately $194 a person. How many folks can you squeeze in a suite anyway? What if we brought sleeping bags and stuff like a real sleepover?
On the other hand, is this cost effective for a local retreat? Or should we just huddle up in front of the fireplace at somebody's house and have our own sleepover and knit and watch movies? Hmmmm...
The Studio Flash Your Stash Fall Event
My knitter homies and I (Gwen, Johanna, Joanna) went to the stash swap at The Studio today and had such a good time. WOW! It was a beautiful day here in Kansas City today and it was so nice to be able to sit outside and knit for the afternoon.
My stash busting was a bust as I had several neatly organized and labeled bags of novelty yarn to trade and not surprisingly there wasn't much interest. :( Thank Gawd for eBay. *Yes, the ENTIRE TABLE is my de-stash stash* *sigh*

Least I forget to mention that Johanna and Joanna met for the first time today and hit things off like Bestest Friends Forever. AWWW! See, I kinda brought them together via this here blog. Johanna joined the Yahoo! Kansas Knits group and I invited her to Knit Night at Border's where Joanna, also, knits. For some odd reason, the two never crossed pathes until today. I knew they would be fast friends right away. They both have the name Jo, they both work in publishing, they both use Photo Bucket, they are both fiber elitist, I'm sure there's more, but sufficed to say they ended up going yarn shopping during most of the event. Joanna sold off quite a bit of her stash, Johanna didn't bring any at all. Gwen could only bring herself to part with 7 oddballs of yarn that she was able to swap or give away. I still don't know how she managed to find that one skein of Halloween orange Lion Brand Thick & Quick Wool-Ease. She gave that to the lady at the table next to us.
I did manage to trade one of my handmade wooden needle holders and a brocade bag for a sweater kit with 6 skeins of Harrisville Designs Soft Spun Yarn Orchid Wool Silk Mohair in 226: White and a pattern for the Austrian Stitch Cardigan. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this yarn. Then, I traded all of my Lion Brand Boucle for 5 skeins of Knit Picks Palette 100% Peruvian Wool. 2 balls of Ash; 2 skeins of Fog; 1 skein of Hyacinth. I'm going to make fingerless gloves with this yarn.

Johanna had the most eggcellent idea to use the Touch Me to make the Scarf Style Vintage Velvet Scarf or maybe the Lion Brand Reversible Cable Scarf. *drool* *booty dance* I GOT IT! I GOT IT! YEAH! YEAH! I GOT IT! BOOO YA!
Thanks to Johanna's keen eye, she spotted one of the newly arrived stashers who had a bag of "Touch Me" and quickly went over to investigate. Even before the lady got a chance to setup her table, we (Johanna, Joanna, Gwen and I) descended on her vicinity and ravaged her stash. Soon, we were grabbing and fondling and pondering and Me being Me well I just grabbed the remainder of the Touch Me and handed the lady $30.00. Ordinarily, 17 skeins of Touch Me would have cost me $250.00. I didn't care. I wanted it and I had to have it. *evil grin* I warned those nearby to clear a path or they would be taking their life into their hands. LOL! MINE!!! This lady was moving houses in town and didn't want to move her yarn to the new house, so she sold it CHEAP! WUH! Talk about a swarm! See, the other girls were trying to calculate how much they MIGHT need and my philosophy is DO NOT SWEAT THE DETAILS in the face of a PHENOMENAL DEAL of the CENTURY! Just buy it and RUN! ...and that's what I did. When the dust settled, the lady mentioned that she was only charging .50 a skein and I bellowed, "WHAT! I gave you $30.00!" and she promptly responded, "Why Yes, you gave me way too much money" and proceeded to give me $20.00 back. WOW! Then, I turned around and bought 6 skeins of laddery yarn for headbands.
OH YEAH! I almost forgot to mention that Joanna, Johanna and I won door prizes today. Sorry, Gwen. I'll be sure to have a nice door prize for you at the next Knit Night, ok!?
I won a Swallow Hill Creations Annie Beaded Tassel Kit. It's pretty cool. I've been meaning to do some bead knitting. Joanna won a Habu Tobi Scarf Kit and I ended up picking out Johanna's gift because she was shopping inside when her named was pulled. Johanna won an Alchemy Poncho Kit with 10 skeins of Alchemy Lone Star in beautiful yellow, green and browns.
My stash busting was a bust as I had several neatly organized and labeled bags of novelty yarn to trade and not surprisingly there wasn't much interest. :( Thank Gawd for eBay. *Yes, the ENTIRE TABLE is my de-stash stash* *sigh*

Least I forget to mention that Johanna and Joanna met for the first time today and hit things off like Bestest Friends Forever. AWWW! See, I kinda brought them together via this here blog. Johanna joined the Yahoo! Kansas Knits group and I invited her to Knit Night at Border's where Joanna, also, knits. For some odd reason, the two never crossed pathes until today. I knew they would be fast friends right away. They both have the name Jo, they both work in publishing, they both use Photo Bucket, they are both fiber elitist, I'm sure there's more, but sufficed to say they ended up going yarn shopping during most of the event. Joanna sold off quite a bit of her stash, Johanna didn't bring any at all. Gwen could only bring herself to part with 7 oddballs of yarn that she was able to swap or give away. I still don't know how she managed to find that one skein of Halloween orange Lion Brand Thick & Quick Wool-Ease. She gave that to the lady at the table next to us.
I did manage to trade one of my handmade wooden needle holders and a brocade bag for a sweater kit with 6 skeins of Harrisville Designs Soft Spun Yarn Orchid Wool Silk Mohair in 226: White and a pattern for the Austrian Stitch Cardigan. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this yarn. Then, I traded all of my Lion Brand Boucle for 5 skeins of Knit Picks Palette 100% Peruvian Wool. 2 balls of Ash; 2 skeins of Fog; 1 skein of Hyacinth. I'm going to make fingerless gloves with this yarn.
