Madonna's Malawi Adoption

I'm torn. One the one hand, I applaud Madonna for her charitable works in Africa. She has established "Raising Malawi" for AIDS orphans. However, my heart goes out to those orphans left behind in the wake of these celebrity adoptions.

An exerpt from "Madonna's Visit stokes hope, skeptism" illustrates some of my own concerns:

"To me it's a phase they (celebrities) are going through. There's a lack of
long-term commitment," said an aid worker in Lilongwe, who asked not to be
identified. "Madonna will raise awareness internationally, but locally not much
will happen."
The publicity surrounding Madonna's visit and rumours that she
might have travelled to Malawi to adopt a child has also stoked unrealistic
expectations among some children that they would be whisked away to a better
life overseas."

Celebrities like Ophrah, Bono, Brangelina and now Madonna have raised the spectre of the plight of Africans, but also, raised the expectations of those long suffering Africans that they will be whisked away to a life of luxury by these wealthy altruist. What about the ones left behind? How must they feel? I bet they feel like they are less worthy because they weren't adopted and lifted out of obscurity.
