Kansas City Knitters for Knockers

PlazaJen, the little girl Jo, Jo Major, Jennie Jen, SarahLois, Amber and I were hanging out at MisKnits last Saturday and somehow we got on the subject of mammograms and breast cancer. Amber mentioned that she had some of the TitBit kits put together by Lisa aka KnitWench for the Kansas City Knitters for Knockers project and I was inspired to take 4 of them.

Using KFB, instead of M1.
Making the one piece version.

For the one piece version, you just purl two rows at the end of the front piece, then start decreasing (k2tog) one stitch before the end of each needle, essentially reversing the front shaping. Stop when you have 12 sts left. Cut the yarn, leaving a LONG tail. Thread the tail through the remaining sts. You can then stuff it through the hole and draw the stitches closed.

For our donated boobs, we leave the hole open so that the women can do a fitting and then seam it shut themselves.

• I've repurposed the lot of Noro Silk Garden #247 that I initially purchased to make the Lady Eleanor last winter.
• I made some aesthetic changes to the original pattern.
• To prevent a hole at the center back, I used the Toe Up Magic Loop Cast-On with 4sts. on each needle (8sts. total), then knit the first increase round using the working yarn and tail increasing to 16 sts. total.
• I opted to do the increases using Knit into Front Back (KFB) instead of Yarn Over (YO) I learned the hard way that if you use KFB, you start with K1, KFB instead of the K2, YO.
• I placed stitch markers to indicate where to KFB on increase rows. That way I don’t have to keep track of what row I’m on until it looks like time for the sleeve opening. I KFB into the stitch before the stitch marker on increase rows.
• As I’ve been working further out in the circle, I’ve been spit splicing matching sections of color so that the striping is even and wider, otherwise you’ll have thin, lop-sided sections of color.
• Used afterthought armhole at 40 sts. between sections.

I'm stalled, but determined to finish the Ribbed Baby Jacket as featured in Prima Magazine July 2005 and the February Sweater from Knitter's Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmermann
that I have started. Co-workers babies are both due in early October.

Vogue Knitting Fall 2006: Fair Isle U-Neck Pullover Redux

So, I had to frog the ribbing again! It just didn't seem right....I kept knitting and knitting around and around this humungous circle and the thought occurred to me last night that I probably should try this on for size before I commit anymore time and effort to the 2" ribbing. Using my crazy math, I ended up casting on something like 372 sts. for a 62" hip. Yeah, I know...baby got back. LOL! Anywho! I slipped the circular needle over my head to try the thing on and guess what!? It was way too big. I think I could have fit 3 of me in this sweater. So, what did I do? I just pinched off part of the ribbing and counted how many stitches I really needed to cast on for the hips, which is 196 sts or 33" with a 6 sts gauge. *sigh* Anywho, the darn thing fits now and I don't care anymore because I'm gonna skinny down to fit into it one way or another dagnabit. LOL!

Tell me if I'm crazy for thinking this but wouldn't it be possible to do this sweater in the round by doubling the number of cast-on stitches, marking the sides and going from there?
So, not only did I have to enlarge this pattern, I'm trying to do it in the round so I don't have to purl. :)
Of course, I've never done a sweater in the round, so what are the thing to keep in mind? pitfalls?
